This Mien Pepper sauce is SO ADDICTING, and goes SO well with literally EVERYTHING! I LOVE this on grilled meats, ALL seafood, and even veggies.
Once you've tried this Mien pepper sauce, smack sauce, with your favorite grilled meats, seafood or veggies, its going to be hard to enjoy these favorites again without it. This is even my favorite way to sauce up my rotisserie chicken.
Do I need any special equipment to make Mien Pepper sauce?
There are a few ways to make this smack sauce depending on how much time you want to spend prepping, or what you tools have on hand. My favorite way is to use a blender or food processor, since you don't have to do much (or any) prep. You can chop and combine all the ingredients for a more liquid sauce, use a mortar for a more traditional chunkier sauce, or blend the ingredients for a salsa like texture.
Equipment
- Any of the following:
- 1 Food Processor
- 1 blender
- 1 Mortar
Ingredients
- 5 cloves Garlic
- Thai Chilis ( I used 6)
- 1 tsp Tamarind Soup Mix
- 1 tbsp Fish Sauce
- 2 tbsp Water
- 1 handful Cilantro (about 15 stems)
Instructions
Blender and Food Processor Instructions
- Add 5 cloves of garlic, Thai chili (if using), 1 tsp tamarind soup mix, 1 tbsp fish sauce and 1 tbsp water to blender or food processor and blend just for a few seconds.
- Add 1 small handful of cilantro (about 15 sprigs) and blend for 1 second until the cilantro is just combined . Be careful not to blend into a liquid. For larger batches, I recommend roughly cutting up the cilantro before combining.
Mortar instructions
- Add 5 cloves of garlic, Thai chili (if using), and 1 tsp tamarind soup mix and use the pestle to form a paste
- Chop up about 1 small handful of cilantro (about 15 sprigs) and add the mortar. Pound until combined.
- Lastly, add the liquids. Add 1 tablespoon fish sauce, and 1 tbsp of water. You can add more or less until the desired consistency is reached

If I am unable to find the taramind soup mix, what can I use as a substitute?
The Savory Chopstick says
Hi! It’s usually in the packets / pre mix area in the Asian market but if you can’t find it you can sub with lime juice and a 1/4tsp of sugar.
